Budget cuts mean several schools may share the same maintenance person. If you have a loose screw in a chair, you might fix it yourself, saving work order for big problems. With that in mind, Ms. G. created a TikTok slide show of everything she purchased for her classroom because they just make sense.

Ms. G. teaches a combined third and fourth-grade class. Two of the most important things in her classroom are a sewing kit, pins, and safety pins. The sewing kit is to repair clothing, backpacks, and lunchboxes as needed. When girls wear hijabs, they sometimes need extra pins after rough play at recess or in physical education class.

Very basic first aid includes Band-Aids and Aquaphor. Using Q-Tips to apply the Aquaphor keeps it sanitary. Severe cuts and scrapes will still go to the nurse, but minor ones can be treated in class. Not all schools have nurses, so this just makes sense.

Kids who wear glasses will break them at some point. Having a glasses repair kit with extra screws, a tiny screwdriver, and other pieces will help keep students seing straight. Having basic hand tools is another handy item for the classroom. As stated earlier, maintenance crews are smaller, and it may take several days to get service for a non-emergency repair. Tools just make sense.

While school systems should supply all the basics and take care of routine fix-it things. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. Making preparations means fewer interruptions and lost class time, which means smiling kids.
Ms. G. keeps additional items in her classroom that just make sense. For example, she keeps masks because some kids like wearing masks.
