Surfing Seal! Orphaned Pup Loves Hanging Ten With Surfers At This San Diego Beach.

A two-photo collage, both showing a baby seal on two different surfboards.

You never know what kinds of creatures you might encounter in the ocean. Still, beachgoers at Pacific Beach in San Diego never would have guessed they’d get such an adorable reoccurring visitor. For over a week now, an orphaned baby seal has made friends with people catching waves at Tourmaline Surf Park.

According to Ed Hartel, a photographer and drone pilot, the little guy showed up four days before Ed decided to see if he was still around so he could capture footage of the seal – and he was! Not only does the seal seem to be a people person, he also has a fascination with surfboards.

“Basically, he swims from board to board jumping on different surfers’ boards,” Ed explained. “He’ll sit there for five to 10 minutes and then paddle to another surfer’s board and he does it all morning long.”

Because the baby seal is healthy and old enough, SeaWorld says they have no reason to intervene. So, for now, surfers will continue to appreciate the sweet seal from afar, giving him the space he needs for them to enjoy the ocean together.
