Chimborazo is the tallest mountain in the world. Yes, it is taller than Mount Everest if the center of the earth is used as the measurement. The dormant stratovolcano is located in the Andes mountain range in central Ecuador. The peak sits 20,548 feet above sea level but measures higher than Everest due to the bulge at the equator.

The mountain is a popular destination for climbers in Ecuador. The volcano has not been active since 550AD. An interesting fact about Chimborazo is that you weigh less at the summit than atop Everest. This phenomenon occurs because of the proximity to the equator. The Earth’s rotation is stronger than near the poles, which counteracts gravity.

Chimborazo’s main “claim to fame” is the mountain is the closest place on Earth to the sun. Because it is near the equator, the elliptical shape of the Earth makes it a brilliant place to catch the sunrise.

The trek up the mountain is not easy. Hikers must plan, have a guide, and carry camping and survival gear.

Once you climb above the cloud layer, the terrain resembles Mars.

Once you reach the summit, the view is stunning. There is no comparison to anything else on Earth. The proximity to the sun and the open horizon create unsurpassed beauty. In the distance, you can see other active volcanoes. Nothing is blocking the view.
