Suicidal Girl Was Clinging To Edge Of Overpass, But A Passing Grandma Rallied A Whole Community To Her Rescue.

A community of people in St. Paul, Minnesota came together in an unexpected location: on the side of an overpass, just above the interstate. But what they were there to do was even more unusual–to save a life.

A woman named Angela Martin was driving when she noticed a girl climbing over a chain link fence on the side of the road, above an interstate. She immediately pulled over to help the stranger who she learned planned to take her life. “No, honey. Don’t do this.” said Angela. The girl proceeded over the fence anyway, but Angela grabbed hold of her shirt.

“She just kept saying ‘My mom don’t love me. My mom don’t care for me.'” Angela told the Star Tribune. “And I kept saying, ‘No, we love you.'” Angela is the mother of two and grandmother of six. “I looked at her as one of my own.”

Angela stayed with the girl and tried to talk her down, but the girl was determined to jump. When she did, Angela held onto her shirt and belt through the fence. Other drivers passing by saw what was happening and went to join her. Before they knew it, a crowd of people had formed, all reaching hands through the fence to hold up the girl hanging from the other side. Some people ran to the interstate below to stop traffic, and positioned a van below her, so just in case the girl were to jump it would break her fall.

Two police officers on the highway looking up at the overpass described it as seeing a woman dangling, held by “a giant mass of people.” They rushed as quickly as they could to join the crowd and help.

“To see police and people in the community spontaneously working together, it was a beautiful thing to see.” said one officer. Another cop added, “It reminded me why I joined the Marine corps and why I always wanted to be a police officer– to bring people together… We’re all part of this community.”

The cops cut a hole in the fence through which they– and the citizens– pulled the girl to safety. She is alive today thanks to the good Samaritans and policemen who came together to help her.
