The Old Town Square Nativity is an annual tradition in the community. As the town reeled over the loss, they did not identify the suspect. Miraculously, the Grinch returned the figurine to the Poudre Fire Authority Station #1 on Thursday, December 19, with a note of apology. The handwritten note said, “I’m really sorry. I made a dumb mistake in the moment. It won’t happen again.”

Although the authorities have not been able to track down the suspect, everyone is happy that the stolen baby Jesus is back. The management company that cares for the nativity does not wish to pursue charges since the figurine is back in place. We can only hope the thief has truly learned his lesson and won’t try any other silly stunt again.

The stolen baby Jesus is now back in the nativity scene where it belongs. This is not the first theft from a Christmas display, nor will it be the last. Although the nativity is a traditional Christian decoration, people from every religion understand the importance of the scene. Fort Collins is inclusive, as there is also a Menorah for Hanukkah and their holiday lights.

Whether the culprit did it on a whim or as a dare from one of his peers, all that matters is the safe return.
