Now, he’s celebrating his team’s victory in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Nigeria 2 to 1. Take a wild guess who scored the winning goal! When this athlete was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2022, he had to step back from his sport while receiving chemotherapy. By February 2023, Sébastien Haller was back on the field and better than ever! During the AFCON final this year, he scored a last-minute goal that put the Ivory Coast on top in the last nine minutes of regulation time.
Footage from the AFCON final shows the crowd going wild after the incredible shot. Sébastien Haller’s teammates quickly swarm him in their excitement. According to CNN, this wasn’t the team’s only last-minute victory during the competition. In fact, Ivory Coast earned the nickname “Zombie Elephants” for their ability to bring a losing game back from the dead in its final moments!
Sébastien Haller knows a thing or two about comebacks after his bout with testicular cancer, so it’s especially meaningful that he was able to secure the winning goal for his team. What an inspiration to us all!
