When car mechanic Josh Daniels walked on stage at X Factor UK, I was immediately taken aback by his quiet confidence. The 21-year-old seemed to be brimming with talent, but his story struck an emotional chord with the judges and audience alike that that left the room in silent anticipation.
The pop song he chose, “Jealous” by Labyrinth is a song about lost love, but for Josh, it’s an ode to his best friend who passed away at 18.
“The lyrics say ‘i’m jealous you’re happy without me’ but I take them to mean ‘I’m jealous he’s now happy in heaven, that he’s moved on to a better place… and I can’t still be with him.”
The judges were so stunned by his performance that half a minute passed before they could find the words to speak. Simon was especially moved, holding back tears the entire performance.
According to Hello Magazine, the segment was taped just after the death of Simon’s mother Julie. Cowell was so moved that he was unable to speak before calling for a vote and walking off stage.
