Stepping onto a yellow public school bus doesn’t usually bring a smile to kids’ faces, but it’s different when you’re boarding Yvonne Johnson’s bus. Every couple of months, Yvonne spends hours decorating her bus with seasonal items like red tinsel hearts for Valentine’s Day or shimmering shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day. Yvonne also makes sure her personal look is on point, rising at 2:30 a.m. each weekday to don glittering fake eyelashes, a full face of makeup, and a different brightly-colored wig each day. Welcome to the Love Bus!
Yvonne has been driving a bus in Omaha, Nebraska for 25 years, and she considers all of the students her “babies.” She started decorating the Love Bus just five years ago, and she has seen a huge increase in the number of smiles from her passengers. This amazing driver takes time to get to know and form relationships with her students. She even gives them each a small present at the end of the year!
“I just love it,”she said. “I didn’t birth them, but they are mine.”
