Actor and philanthropist Ryan Reynolds is beloved around the world, but he’s never been shy about which country will always have his heart. Reynolds hails from Vancouver, Canada, and over the years he’s donated tons of time and money to social causes to help people in his homeland.

In 2022, he was honored to receive a Governor General’s Award to recognize his contributions to their academic, artistic, and social fields. In addition to receiving a medal, the actor was surprised with an original song written and performed by fellow Canadian Steven Page of the Barenaked Ladies.
Reynolds shared his reaction to seeing the music video for the first time on his social channels, insisting, “I’m not crying. It’s just maple syrup.”
It’s not surprising that Steven wrote such a fun and catchy song, but what is surprising is how moving it is! It’s called “Canada Loves You Back,” and it’s full of pithy one-liners and the kind of self-deprecating humor that Canadians are famous for.
“You’re Canada’s own superhero,” Steven sings. “And not simply when you’re on-screen. You shine a spotlight on the people who might not otherwise get to be seen.”
Reynolds is visibly moved as he watches the video, and we can’t blame him a bit! We can feel the love all the way down here in the States. In fact, we love him, too, so thanks, Canada, for letting us share. Check out the original song in the video below, and be sure to share this story to congratulate Reynolds on this tremendous honor.
