Hold on to your hats, because we’re about to change everything you’ve ever thought about the cello before!

You know the cello, right? The big string instrument that’s related to the violin? You normally don’t see them outside of fancy concert halls, and you certainly never hear them playing rock and roll music. Until now, that is.

On an episode of “America’s Got Talent,” brothers Emil & Dariel performed their “Dueling Cellos” version of the Jimi Hendrix classic “Purple Haze.”

The brothers learned to play the cello from their grandfather, who was backstage watching their performance with tears in his eyes. Emil and Dariel explained that their grandfather had fled Russia as a young man, bringing with him only his beloved cello. He had taught his grandsons everything he knows, and now it was their time to shine!

The two clean-cut young men stepped onto the stage, and everyone expected a normal, boring cello performance. As soon as they started playing, however, it became clear that these kids knew how to rock!

Emil, age 16, took the iconic guitar solo sections of the song, and the way he shredded those cello strings can only be described as “metal!”

The audience and judges were in complete shock!

Afterwards, all four judges had nothing but praise for the musical act. “You guys are the coolest guys on the block, I mean it,” said judge Howard Stern.

“I’ve never heard anything like this before; I’ve never seen anything like this before!” exclaimed Mel B.
