Pastor Discovers Little Boys In Trash Heap Outside Church & Makes Beautiful Decision.

The boys were two years and seven months old, when they were first spotted sitting on top of a pile of trash bags outside a Florida ministry. Both wore only diapers.

But they hadn’t been abandoned there. Rather, they were living in the woods with their parents, who regularly sought out hot meals, clothing, and toiletries at the nearby Refuge Church.

“There were actually four or five bags here. A child in a car seat was on top of a bag. The other child was sitting here at his feet, cold. They were only in diapers, no clothes.”

Refuge Church was founded by Ronnie and Krystal Stewart. The couple noticed the boys and their parents had been sitting outside their church for 10 hours one day in early November 2015. As the darkness gathered and storm clouds started rolling in, Krystal became increasingly alarmed.

I asked my husband, “Since the parents are high and refuse to go to a shelter, should we just ask them if they want us to take the babies home for a warm bath & bed for the night?”

“Ummm they said yes…” were the next words I heard. Without hesitation they put an old, blue polo shirt they had gotten from the church on the toddler and handed me the baby in the car seat.

The boys were given warm baths and a soft place to sleep that night, and they took advantage of it, sleeping for 10 hours straight.

“I don’t think they’ve ever slept in a bed before,”Krystal speculated.

This loving couple did what they could for the boys in the short time they had them, but returned them to their parents the next morning. Little did they know, that was just the start of this journey.

The following day, a Sunday, the parents approached with their two boys, along with a social worker. The parents had lost custody of their children, and they would have to be placed in foster care unless another arrangement could be made.

Krystal and Ronnie already had three children of their own, Ronnie, 15, Riley, 13, and Selah, 8. But could they possibly take in these two babies, at least until their parents figured out their next steps?

What started out as a five-month, temporary situation has since turned into a lifetime commitment. They launched a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of adoption, raising four times the $10,000 goal.

We cannot deny God’s sense of humor; my husband laughs as he remembers the conversation that we had the day before we met the boys. I was 6 weeks post-op from a total hysterectomy after battling an early cancer diagnosis and sadly said, “Well, no more kids for us!”
