Any pet parent knows that taking care of animals is, in many ways, like caring for kids. It’s a massive responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Sadly, however, some people aren’t ready for that level of responsibility when they bring fur babies into their homes, which contributes to high rates of animals being surrendered to shelters. Whether people have kids and their pets don’t respond well or they lose their jobs and can no longer afford to keep their cat or dog, the fact of the matter is that even loving pet parents sometimes have to give their animals up. Such was the case for the mom of one senior dog named Reese.

One day, a woman from Fayetteville, Georgia, was outside when she saw a little senior dog on her lawn. It soon became clear to her that sadly, the 13-year-old dachshund mix had been abandoned.

After approaching the pup, the woman was surprised to find a note attached to her. The person who wrote the message was clearly distraught about the fact that she had to give Reese up because she loved her dearly. Unfortunately, though, she had four children and couldn’t dedicate the time to Reese that she deserved.

Compounding the issue even more, some local animal control shelters did not take surrenders, so Reese’s mom probably felt that she had no other choice. In a positive twist of fate, she left her on the doorstep of a compassionate woman who wanted to re-home her before taking her to a rescue or shelter.

That woman posted to a private Facebook page asking people she knows if anyone would be willing to take her since she already had three dogs. The story caught the attention of Mariel Weigland, shelter director for Royal Animal Refuge.

Mariel then approached a woman named Robyn Klein, who regularly fostered animals until they found homes, to see if she could help Reese out. Robyn’s mother, Suzy Reeves, immediately requested to take her. She’d just lost her pup and knew the moment she saw Reese, she had to help her.

After spending time with the adorable pooch, Suzy made the incredible choice to adopt Reese! Since then, the two have been showering each other with love and affection.

It’s sad to think that Reese’s mom had to give her up, but it’s wonderful to see this chain reaction of kindness and compassion. She got the fairy tale ending she deserved! Be sure to share Reese’s story with all of the pet parents in your life!
