Prince Harry Opens Up About Losing His Mom at Such a Young Age

Prince Harry Princess Diana

Princess Diana passed away following a car accident in 1997. Her death shocked the world, and people mourned the loss, but no one felt it more than her sons. Prince William was 15, and Prince Harry was just 12 when Princess Diana died. The boys, already living a very different life in the public eye, had to learn how to live without their mother’s loving hands to hold. More than two decades later, Prince Harry appeared on “MasterClass” where he discussed his mother’s death and how he felt “disloyal and guilty” for experiencing happiness after her death.

Prince Harry Turned His Grief Into Something Princess Diana Would Love

Princess Diana was well known for her kind heart and charitable nature, which Prince Harry certainly inherited. He explained that following her death, he developed a bit of a “superpower” that allowed him to focus completely on a task and not become distracted.

“Once I realized where the superpower was coming from and the connection to it, my fear was if I heal from it, if I go looking for the fix, then do I lose it? Do I lose the superpower? Does that mean I lose the connection to my mom?” Prince Harry recalled.

He added that he remained stoic after his mother’s death until he finally let it all out. “Away from crying eyes, away from the cameras and the, I guess, the expectation and perhaps judgments and the glaring eyes of the world, I cracked to the point where I cried,” he said. “And I remember thinking or feeling that it actually felt really good to cry.”

Today Prince Harry’s joy comes from his family, just as Princess Diana’s did. He and Meghan Markle share son Prince Archie and daughter Princess Lilibet, whom Diana would certainly have adored.

“The key to finding the joy and happiness balance is no more than 10 days away from my wife and kids. This is balancing my work and the purpose behind that as well as being a dad and a husband and the sort of multi-identity elements coming together,” Prince Harry shared.
