Melissa Butt was watching her young children and two dogs, Paco and Slayer, playing in the back yard when the pups starting showing uncharacteristic behavior. The pitbull mixes started barking at something in the grass and would not come when called… then they rushed into an attack mode.

Melissa watched anxiously as the pups finally calmed… but when she got close enough see the culprit her worst fears were realized. The dogs had rescued her kids from a venomous snake native to the southern United States – the deadly copperhead.

“I’m calling them ‘our little heroes,” Melissa said. “Thank goodness my boys found that snake and killed it, because it could have severely hurt those children.â€
Then she saw Slayer’s face start to swell and realized the dogs had been bitten.
Melissa rushed her dogs to the vet. It turns out Slayer had been bitten twice by the snake and by the time they got to the vet was in pretty bad shape.

The veterinarians at Blue Pearl Animal Hospital rushed to stabilize Slayer when it became clear he received the largest dose of venom. They started flushing his system with saline and antivenom and kept him overnight.
In the end, Slayer stayed 3 full days in hospital with troubling symptoms… but was soon given a clean bill of health and returned back to his normal, cuddly self.
But his vet bills were extensive
Luckily, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping heroic animals get the treatment they need, Frankie’s Friends, decided to pick up Slayer’s $7,000 medical bill. If it wasn’t for Frankie’s Friends, Melissa says she would not have been able to afford the life-saving treatment for her sweet pup.

The pitbull breed tends to get a bad rep, but Melissa wants to use Slayer’s newfound fame to remind us all how protective and wonderful the pups are at heart.
Slayer is now back at home, cuddling up in his favorite spot and getting all the love and attention from his grateful forever family, without a care in the world.
