On Wednesday, Feb. 14, one person, Lisa Lopez-Galvan, was killed and 23 more were injured when a gunman opened fire in Kansas City, Missouri, as thousands were celebrating the Cheifs’ victory on Feb. 11. Two of those victims were 8 and 10-year-old sisters, Madison and Melia Reyes, who were related to Lopez-Galvan.
On Feb. 15, Patrick and Brittany headed to Children’s Mercy Hospital to visit the girls who were recovering from surgeries to repair bullet wounds to their legs.
“We are avid Chiefs fans and very proud of our home team through the highs and the lows. Madison and Melia’s lives have forever changed since Wednesday’s senseless act,” the Reyes family said in a statement to PEOPLE.
“In a time where they are traumatized, saddened, and worried, having a surprise appearance from Patrick and Brittany Mahomes brought the first smile to their faces since tragedy struck,” the statement continued. “Even though they will be wearing casts for several months they are excited to show loved ones that Patrick signed their cast.”
Patrick and Brittany Mahomes Make Massive Donation to Shooting Victims
Patrick and Brittany Mahomes visited each sister separately and spent time chatting before posing for pictures.
The family concluded by thanking the Mahomes’ for their “kind, caring, and loving” gesture.
“[We] ask that the community please keep them in their prayers as they navigate life moving forward,” they added.
The quarterback partnered with the Chiefs to create the KStrong fund, which will support the shooting’s victims and first responders. The NFL, the Chiefs, and the family of the team’s CEO, Clark Hunt, made a combined donation of $200,000.
Patrick and his wife followed the massive contribution by adding another $50,000 with the help of their 15 & the Mahomies Foundation.
“Just like #ChiefsKingdom has always been there for me and my family, we want to be there for them. “Please join me, Brittany, and @15andMahomies to support and if you are able, donate here,” Patrick said.
