Oldest Know Levis? 150-Yr-Old Gold Rush Era Jeans Sell At Auction For $100,000.

A man leans down to get closer to the oldest known pair of Levis. The jeans are laid out on a table.

Jeans are known for their durability, but I didn’t think they were quite this lasting! Around twenty years ago in a Nevada mine, a rough looking pair of jeans were discovered. Although they were incredibly dirty, and part of the lower left leg was missing, it was remarkable how much they had held up, considering they’re believed to have been made in 1873. In fact, they’re believed to be the oldest pair in the world!

A Japanese collector, Brit Eaton, bought the pair of Levis as part of a trade in October 2022 but, just last month, chose to include them in the second annual vintage clothing auction called Durango Vintage Festivus. In the end, they sold for $100,000 to an online bidder in Thailand.

According to Eaton, the winning bidder for the vintage Levis has a collection “beyond belief,” so this new addition should fit right in.

“It was [a] great event,” Eaton said. “Everyone left … entertained. And that was the main reason that I bought them in the first place.”
