For decades, teenage and tween girls flocked to the local shopping mall for the latest fashion trends. No trip to the mall was complete without a stop at Claire’s. Whether you needed to get your ears pierced, grab some new jewelry, or just wanted to gaze at the mesmerizing merchandise, Claire’s was the place to be. As malls become a thing of the past, it appears Claire’s may join the retail history books after filing for bankruptcy for the second time in less than a decade. The company announced it had entered voluntarily into Chapter 11 proceedings in the hopes of saving the business of more than 50 years.

Filing For Bankruptcy Was Not Easy For Claire’s
Chris Cramer, CEO of Claire’s since 2023, shared his feelings in a news release.
“This decision is difficult, but a necessary one. Increased competition, consumer spending trends and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail, in combination with our current debt obligations and macroeconomic factors, necessitate this course of action for Claire’s and its stakeholders,” he said. “We remain in active discussions with potential strategic and financial partners and are committed to completing our review of strategic alternatives.”
The news evoked a sense of nostalgia in many people for days gone by.
“Claire’s is filing for bankruptcy again, and it took me back. I got my ears pierced there as a kid sparkly shelves, nervous excitement and that feeling of growing up. Some brands aren’t just stores, they hold memories,” someone shared on X

As of today, Claire’s will continue business as usual amid the bankruptcy filings. Chris Cramer thanked employees for their dedication to the business.
“I’d like to express my gratitude for our employees, who have continued to work diligently in a constantly evolving consumer landscape to deliver amazing products and experiences for our customers,” he added. “We remain committed to serving our customers and partnering with our vendors and landlords in other regions during this time.”
