“My Elderly Neighbor Showing My Great Pyrenees Rescue That Not ALL Men Are Bad”

View of a backyard. An elderly man stands on one side of a fence, bending down with arm stretched out. A Great Pyrenees hesitantly starts to sniff the man's hand

Our past helps shape who we are today. This is just as true for our pets as it is for humans. That’s why some newly adopted pets take a while to get adjusted to their new home. Past experiences taught them that people can’t be trusted. Ashton Avery’s Great Pyrenees rescue, named Sprite, doesn’t trust men in particular. Still, when his elderly neighbor found out, this didn’t deter him from forming a friendship with the pup.

On the contrary, this kind neighbor was more than happy to earn Sprite’s trust. In order to do just that, he took the time to greet him any chance he could get. Sprite wasn’t quite sure how to feel at first. But with time and lots of love, he’s come to love this neighbor just as much as Ashton! See the progression of their relationship in the video below.

“This has to be healing something inside of both of them,” a thoughtful person points out in reply to Ashton’s video. Other commentors add, “The way he went from scared to demanding he come out for him was so healing” and “That’s his paw paw now.”

Patient Neighbor Takes the Time to Earn the Trust of This Great Pyrenees Rescue with a Tragic Past

If it can take about six months for any dog to get used to their new home, imagine then how much more difficult it must be for a dog like this one to learn to trust men again? There’s no telling what all this sweet pup has gone through to fear others like this. Thankfully, however, Sprite will never have to live like that again.

It’s truly incredible to see the way love and care can totally transform an animal with a tragic past. Another tear-jerking example comes from a rescue dog that once lived in Ukraine. Like this Great Pyrenees, she also didn’t trust men — watch that change here!
