A dog looks unsure as a man get close to kissing her on the cheek. Text on the image says: POV: Your Ukrainian rescue dog who was terrified of men slowly starts to trust your boyfriend

Rescue dogs need a little extra love and understanding. This is something a woman, who goes by Ditta & Co. on social media, understands from experience. That’s because she adopted a Ukrainian rescue dog who has clearly been through a lot. As a result, the poor German Shepherd mix, who she named Ditta, has developed a deep fear of men. As you can imagine, this made it difficult for the woman’s boyfriend and Ditta to be around each other much.

There are lots of reasons why a dog may not be particularly fond of certain people. Sometimes it’s something silly, like not liking glasses. But other times, it’s because a person reminds them of past abuse they’ve endured. With this in mind, the woman’s sweet boyfriend was extra careful and patient when trying to interact with Ditta. And, in the end, it paid off! Watch a tear-jerking montage of their journey together in the video below.

At first, Ditta absolutely can’t stand being anywhere close to the strange man in her home. After a while, she allows him to touch her. But even then she’ll only allow it for a moment before getting upset. But with each clip, it becomes clearer: Ditta is learning to trust again. In fact, now Ditta happily waits by the front door for him to return home!

Man Stays Patient As He Helps Teach His Girlfriend’s Rescue Dog to Trust Again

Like humans, dogs can have complicated pasts. It’s oh-so heartwarming to see people who are willing to take the time and care needed in order to help a dog live a life full of trust and love again.

“You know they’re in love when the full body wiggles come out,” someone points out in the comment section, with another adding, “That’s just magic.”
