The expectation to do everything just right as a parent can hit hard sometimes. Last week, however, Carys Roberts of Ontario, Canada gave some important reminders in the form of a birthday invite: First, that perfection isn’t attainable. Second, that humor and honesty will get you the friends you need.

With a party for her twins’ 5th birthday in July to prepare for, Carys no doubt has a lot on her plate. What theme will both Edie and Elle enjoy? What kinds of activities will the kids do? She could have become overwhelmed with the need to do it all flawlessly but, instead, she sent out an invite that has parents everywhere (not just at her kids’ school!) dying to be friends with her.
One of those potential friends, Natalie LeClaire, was so thrilled by the invite her son received that she just had to share it on TikTok.
“I opened his backpack and there was a birthday invitation in there,” Natalie told TODAY.com. “I started reading it and my jaw dropped. It was so honest and straight up. I was like, ‘I need to be friends with this person.'”
“You are invited to Elle and Edie’s 5th birthday party,” Carys wrote. “This event is brought to you by Pinterest fails and the Dollar Store, so please set your expectations appropriately.”
The invite goes on to give guests a sneak peek at what kind of decor they can expect.
“As requested, the theme will be ‘unicorns but with rainbows and maybe bats but there should be princesses and also Minnie and we need dancing lights'” she explained. “So… dress accordingly…”
Thanks to Carys’ honesty and wit, Natalie’s TikTok has gotten more than 4 million views – and many of those viewers would love the chance to attend the party, though, we have a feeling that Carys won’t have quite enough room for that many guests.
For those that will be able to attend, Carys was happy to provide more details so they could come prepared.
“Please pack a bathing suit, sunscreen, puddle jumpers, etc. in case your sweet baby angels decide our original plan sucks and the pool would be a better time,” she advised. “If you would like to drop off and run, we support that entirely. If you would like to stay, we will provide ‘adult juice’ and deny any offers to help to be polite but deep down want the support. You do you.”
You’d think it would take a while to create such a masterpiece, but Carys says that she “whipped up” the invitation in no time with hopes that the other parents would “find it funny.” Safe to say, mission accomplished!

“Ultimately, I just didn’t want anyone to stress about gifts,” Carys told TODAY.com. “The last thing we want is for people to be spending a lot of money. We’re really low-key. I’ve received a lot of great feedback and I’m truly thrilled that people thought the invitation was so relatable and funny.”
