Parenting is full of learning moments. Kids don’t come with instruction manuals, and most of us are just winging it. There are self-help books aplenty, but who has time for that between diaper changes and meal prep? Has anyone seen the Orajel? We develop habits, and those may include a mom phrase or two.

One of the biggest challenges for new parents is learning how to communicate effectively with and around children. Adult language isn’t necessarily a good thing when your kid is like a little parrot. When it comes to kids, it is essential to consider what you want them to say in front of Grandma. If you have a colorful nickname for your spouse, you know that mom phrase is popping out of your toddler at the wrong time.
Anna hadn’t thought much about her nickname for her husband. She’d been calling him “Babe.” Then one day she realized their toddler was toddling around hollering “Babe” while looking for his Dad.
That was Anna’s lightbulb moment. The lightbulb burned brightly as she said to herself, “THAT’S why other parents call themselves ‘Mommy’ and ‘Daddy.'” While it may take some time to get comfortable with the changes, it is likely to be better in the long run.
Language specialists recommend not using “baby talk” with children. By using real words and complete sentences, your child learns to pronounce words correctly and understand their contextual use. They also avoid developing poor speech habits. Your child’s vocabulary will grow rapidly during their first years.
In no time, your toddler will be 16 and begging for the car keys, so cherish these early years.
