Dancing isn’t just for professionals; it’s also a great way to stay in shape.
Many people turn to Zumba or other hip-hop-inspired dance classes to stay in shape while having a great time in a group setting. For Mike Alancourt, an aspiring ASL/English interpreter from Jacksonville, Florida, jumping into a hip-hop cardio class one afternoon has even launched him into internet stardom.
Mike describes himself on Instagram as, “mostly dork, part hippy,” and he certainly doesn’t look like any hip-hop dancer we’ve ever seen. Looks are often deceiving, however, because when Mike turned up at 1Vibe Dance studio for his class with former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader turned choreographer Jennifer Colvin, he came ready to rumble!
Over the course of just one hour, Mike learned the complicated modern dance steps that Jennifer choreographed for her students that day. “A lot to absorb in an hour,” Mike wrote on Instagram when he uploaded a video of himself learning the steps. Indeed, it’s hard to believe that a novice dancer could pick up the moves so quickly, especially when this novice seems to be at least a decade older than just about everyone else in the class.
Yet learn the routine he did, and well. The studio recorded each of the students in groups of three performing the dance at the end of class, and it’s not hyperbole to say that Mike blew everyone else out of the water.
As the music pumped through the studio, Mike rocked every single step of the routine, throwing up his hands and adding his own personality to the moves in the process. He brings a certain contained energy to the room that is palpable even through the video.
If this dance video won’t keep us from ever judging by appearances, what will? Mike absolutely crushes it! Once 1Vibe shared the video of Mike cutting up their dance floor on social media the clip instantly took off. Soon some of Mike’s favorite singers and dancers were liking and commenting on his slick moves, and actor Will Smith even shared the video!
Mike seems completely overwhelmed by the positive reaction to his killer dance moves, taking to Instagram to express his thanks for the kindness of strangers everywhere. “I spent a lot of years as a prisoner of my own fear, so to my mom, and to my Springfield family… Thank you so much for the endless support,” he wrote. “These past few years have been amazing. It feels so good to be free again.”
You look amazing, Mike! Keep dancing and keep doing you! Watch Mike crush his newly learned dance steps in the video below, and be sure to share this fun moment with others!
