Meet The Mayyas, The Lebanese Dance Troupe That Has AGT Judges Mesmerized.

Meet the Mayyas, the dance troupe that’s all about movement – and not just the kind we do with our bodies.

The Mayyas are an all-female team from Lebanon, a middle eastern country where dancing as a profession is not entirely respected, especially for women. But that didn’t stop choreographer Nadim Cherfan from forming the group in 2019!

Nadir and the Mayyas have already had a taste of success. In 2019, they won the sixth season of “Arabs Got Talent,” nabbing a $53,333 cash prize. That same year they appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions.” While they didn’t win, Simon Cowell called the act “genius.”

In 2022, the troupe finally got their shot at a $1 million prize when they were selected to perform on the 17th season of “America’s Got Talent.” Nadir said they were inspired to audition by former AGT contestant Nightbirde, whose sweet song and tragic health story touched so many people.

“You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy,” the singer advised. Nadir and the Mayyas took those words as a call to action!

Before they began their act, the ladies told judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, and Sofia Vergara about the difficulties they face being dancers in Lebanon.

“Lebanon is a very beautiful country, but we live a daily struggle,” said one dancer.

“Standing on the biggest stage in the world is the only chance for us to prove to the world what Arab women can do, what art we can create, the fights we fight,” another added.

The name Mayyas “is a word in Arabic that means the proud walk of a lioness,” the troupe explained. Just seconds into their performance, we can see why the name fits so perfectly!

The dancers move as one unit, with arms and legs moving in perfect synchronicity. They prowl like cats and strike like snakes, hypnotizing viewers with their incredibly fluid movements. When they had finished, the judges’ mouths hung open in shock. Even Simon, who had seen the act before, called them, “the best dance act we’re likely to ever see.”

All of the judges were blown away, but Sofia felt a special connection to the dancers because of their fight for equal rights. When it came time to cast their votes, the actress told them, “I would be so honored to empower you in this journey, because you deserve it. And I want to be part of this!”

Then she stood up and nailed the Golden Buzzer, sending the Mayyas directly on to the finals!

As golden confetti rained down on the dancers, we can’t help but cheer for the strides they’re making worldwide! Powerful women standing up for their rights sends a message to everyone who has ever been made to feel “less than.”
