Imagine knowing your child is in grave danger and not being able to save him. That became one mom’s living nightmare when her little boy fell onto the tracks at Mumbai’s Vangani Railway Station in India.
Partially blind, she could only reach out and desperately grab at the air as her son tried and failed to climb back up onto the platform. Meanwhile, a train was rapidly approaching….
Central Railway employee Mayur Shelke witnessed the terrifying scene unfold — and didn’t waste a second before sprinting over. Risking his own life, he jumped down next to the boy and lifted him into his mother’s arms before climbing up himself. The train passed by moments later, leaving no doubt that Mayur saved the boy’s life.
“This work of his cannot be compared with any prize or money, but he will be rewarded for fulfilling his responsibility, and motivating humanity with his work,” wrote Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Railways.
