Now more than ever, many American families want to focus on healthier eating. In April 20205, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office announced plans to phase out petroleum-based synthetic food dyes. In-N-Out believes in the intuitive and shared with Good Morning America its plans to remove synthetic food dyes from its menu.

In addition to removing Yellow 5 and Red 40, In-N-Out will stop using the preservative calcium propionate and high-fructose corn syrup.
“We’re also in the process of transitioning to ketchup made with real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup and researching an even better-quality oil for our fries,” In-N-Out Owner and President Lynsi Snyder said in a statement.
In-N-Out Wants To Be A Healthier Choice For Consumers
In addition to dyes, In-N-Out will also eliminate sucralose and saccharin sweetener packets and will offer non-dairy oat milk creamer, GMA reported.
In-N-Out’s plans align with the FDA’s goal of making Americans healthier with better food options.
“Today, the FDA is asking food companies to substitute petrochemical dyes with natural ingredients for American children as they already do in Europe and Canada,” FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, MD, MPH said in an April 22 news release. “We have a new epidemic of childhood diabetes, obesity, depression, and ADHD. Given the growing concerns of doctors and parents about the potential role of petroleum-based food dyes, we should not be taking risks and do everything possible to safeguard the health of our children.”
Per GMA, In-N-Out plans to institute the following:
Swapping artificial flavors for natural flavors in chocolate syrup and hot cocoa
Using natural vanilla instead of artificial in its shake mix
Replacing calcium propionate with natural enzymes and removing cottonseed oil from its buns
Using natural sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup in its shake mix, strawberry syrup, spread, and Signature Pink Lemonade
Eliminating Red 40 and swapping it with beta carotene and vegetable juice in Strawberry Shakes and its Signature Pink Lemonade
Replacing Yellow 5 with turmeric in its spread, chilies, and pickles.
