Sometimes appearances are deceiving. Take Lucy and Maria, for instance. At first glance, these two young women have nearly nothing in common. Deep brown skin, dark curls and big brown eyes describe one, while notably fair skin, eye-catching red hair, and bright blue eyes pinpoint the other. But take a moment to look a bit more closely, and you’ll notice a few small clues to an astonishing phenomena.
Their body shapes and heights are nearly identical, the same can be said for their facial structure, and a handful of physical characteristics isn’t all these girls share.

In fact, Lucy and Maria Aylmer spent nine months in extremely close quarters. But we don’t mean in a dorm room or adoption center. We’re talking about time growing inside their mother’s womb.
While It may be hard to believe, Lucy and Maria Aylmer are twins.

Lucy and Maria are products of a racially mixed family; the girls’ mother, Donna, is half Jamaican, and Vince, their father, is Caucasian.
The twins’ siblings exhibit a medium complexion, a more typical gene distribution in racially diverse families. So meeting the twins for the first time was a shocking experience for everyone involved!

“It was such a shock …because things like skin colour don’t show up on scans before birth,”Lucy, the ginger, told the UK’s DailyMail.“[Our Mom] had no idea that we were so different. When the midwife handed us both to her, she was just speechless.â€
And while the twins, now 20, say they share a similar clothing style, there was never any switching places in school.
“No one ever believes we are twins,”Lucy said. “Friends have even made us produce our birth certificates to prove it.â€
Lucy believes she and Maria couldn’t look more different if they tried.

And those remarkably polar images are reflective of some personality differences as well. Leading unique lives at separate colleges, Maria is an outgoing law student while shy Lucy studies art and design.
