Legendary “Cheers” Actor George Wendt Has Died At 76

When Norm Peterson walked into Cheers, everyone knew his name. They shouted hello at the lovable character who always stopped in for a beer or six before he went home to his wife, Vera. George Wendt brought the character of Norm to life for all 11 seasons of the beloved NBC sitcom. Sadly, George “died peacefully in his sleep while at home” in Los Angeles.

“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” said his publicist, Melissa Nathan. “He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”

The cause of death has not been revealed.

Everyone Knew George Wendt’s Name

The news of losing the iconic actor saddened the hearts of fans and friends.  Many took to social media to share words of encouragement with George’s wife, Bernadette Birkett, 78, and his three children: Joe Wendt, 38; Hilary Wendt, 40; and Daniel Wendt, 38.

Bill Simons shared on X, “RIP George Wendt. Enjoyed him in literally everything, but what he created with Norm Peterson stands the test of time. Just a crucial piece of one of the best 30-min shows ever. The last Cheers scene ever was Norm with Sam… and it kinda had to be.”

Another fan shared a famous Norm Peterson quote, “It’s a dog eat dog world out there, and I’m wearing milk bone underwear” George Wendt 1948-2025, RIP”

“RIP, George Wendt. George sent me this hilarious video recently. His charm and good nature are evident here. What a great guy! My condolences to his friends and family,” another friend shared.

A fan put it best on X. They wrote, “To properly honor George Wendt.. I’m going to a bar tonight where everybody knows my name RIP.”

Eerily, Cheers ended its 11-season run on this day in May 1993. The series ended with Norm Peterson as the last customer to leave the bar. He told Sam Malone, “You could never be unfaithful to your one true love. You always come back to her.”
