Some well-intentioned but ill-informed owners of dogs with thick, double coats see it as an act of mercy to shave them during the heat of summer. But the short hairs of their undercoat serve a dual purpose, trapping air to help insulate them and regulate their body temperatures, and protecting them against the sun’s rays.
So when Leigh Simmons, a 27-year-old Welsh man living in Shenzhen, China, took his German shepherd mix to a groomer recently, he just wanted his pup to get a little summer haircut. He and his wife had taken Seren in earlier that year, after finding the cutie pie wandering the streets as a stray.

Though Simmons had worked in Shenzhen for more than half a year teaching English, he knew little Mandarin. And the woman tasked with the grooming spoke no English, so “I ended up miming shaving the dog and I made a ‘bzzz’ sound,”said 27-year-old Leigh Simmons.
Mimicking a buzz cut to a non-English-speaking groomer in China, where poodles are extremely popular, did not end well for Seren, who looked like an extra in “The Lion King”when Simmons returned that afternoon to retrieve him.

Fortunately, Simmons saw the humor in the situation and burst out laughing. The women working there looked confused and embarrassed, but he dutifully forked out the equivalent of $13 for the disastrous “trim.â€
It looks like Simmons has plenty of time to learn some Mandarin before Seren’s next haircut!
