The Surprisingly Powerful Reason Lady Gaga Didn’t Wear A Dress On The Red Carpet.

Lady Gaga is not shy when it comes to fashion. When the singer’s career first started, her unique (to put it lightly) style set her apart on every red carpet.

By now, the singer is used to her fashion choices being a topic of conversation. When she wore a power suit to ELLE Magazine’s “Women in Hollywood” event, she was doing more than looking good, Gaga was taking control of the narrative and sending a message of strength and power to women everywhere.

Over the years, Lady Gaga has slowly transitioned from the singer who showed up to a red carpet in a meat dress (yes, you read that right – Google it) and performing songs like “Poker Face” to wearing less theatrical makeup and letting her amazing voice do the showy work for her. While she still gets dolled up from time to time (can you blame her?), it seems that the singer has become more comfortable in her own skin – which is an incredible accomplishment for an woman but particularly for a woman in Hollywood.

Still, many were curious the reasoning behind the power suit at the ELLE event, where Lady Gaga was recognized as one of the magazine’s “Women in Hollywood”. When it came time for her award acceptance speech, the singer (and actress) explained:

I tried on dress after dress today getting ready for this event, one tight corset after another, one heel after another, a diamond, a feather, thousands of beaded fabrics and the most beautiful silks in the world. To be honest, I felt sick to my stomach. And I asked myself: What does it really mean to be a woman in Hollywood? We are not just objects to entertain the world. We are not simply images to bring smiles or grimaces to people’s faces. We are not members of a giant beauty pageant meant to be pit against one another for the pleasure of the public. We women in Hollywood, we are voices. We have deep thoughts and ideas and beliefs and values about the world and we have the power to speak and be heard and fight back when we are silenced.

She went on, saying that of the many options hanging in her closet, the suit “buried quietly in the corner” stood out the most, and even made her cry. She said, “in this suit, I felt like me today… I felt the truth of who I am well up in my gut”.

Lady Gaga continued with her speech, bravely telling her story of surviving an assault and having to cope with the PTSD that followed. She described her battles with mental health and her Fibromyalgia diagnosis. She explained that her decision to wear the suit was a reflection of her decision to “take the power back, to wear the pants.”

She wrapped up her speech by saying that for her, being a Woman of Hollywood is acknowledging her privilege to have a platform. Then, the singer declared that she will be using that platform to “be a helping hand” and “a force of change”.

Once again, Lady Gaga has everyone talking. Read Lady Gaga’s powerful speech in its entirety below, share!
