When you’re working on the front lines of a pandemic, you have to get creative to boost morale.
That’s why two health care workers at Presbyterian Queens Hospital in New York have taken it upon themselves to raise the spirits of their patients and coworkers with music!

Kym Villamer is an assistant nurse manager, while Dawn Jones is a patient experience lead. When the hospital had to close its cafeteria to make room for more COVID-19 patients, the two of them were asked to sing a song to “bless” the new patient area. They chose “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” and the response blew them away!
“We feel like it’s a mountain that we’re trying to climb,”Kym said. “Right now, it’s a climb – it’s quite a climb. But we feel like if we do it all together, if we are in this together, it’s not going to be high enough to bring us down.â€
Now, they’re traveling around the hospital to sing in every unit. They’ve even been known to perform in stairwells if they spot someone looking down!

“It’s definitely spontaneous, dropping by, asking the staff to come to the nurse’s station and join us for a song,”Dawn said. “That’s what’s been happening.â€
She added that she now considers caring for her coworkers to be part of her job.
“It’s not what we were hired to do, but I feel like it’s a promotion because we’re giving people the essential needs of food, water, snacks,”she said. “We’re all doing each other’s jobs and helping out where we can.â€

Together, they hope the message behind “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” will inspire everyone who hears it!
“This song can be a love relationship within the human spirit,”Dawn added. “It’s no mountain, no valley, no river can get in the way of us getting to you. And that means us getting to you as our coworkers, whatever you need, how we can support you.â€
