About a year ago, on Christmas Eve, a Groveport, Ohio family was forever changed by a devastating event: the sudden death of their 42-year-old father. 15 months later, tragedy struck once again with the unexpected death of their 46-year-old mother.

With both Mom and Dad now gone, the family was reduced to only 18-year-old Kyle Nester and his 15-year-old sister. Their grandparents lived over 2 hours away, and Kyle feared he and his sister would be separated. “She’s all I have left. So I have to do everything for her,” said Kyle of his sister. So he made a big decision to keep the family together.
Kyle decided to become his sister’s legal guardian.

“I’m going to try and take guardianship of her and make sure she has everything she needs through college and everything,” he says in the video below.
But Kyle isn’t doing it alone. His grandparents– who support the decision– are helping put Kyle in touch with the legal resources he needs. And the whole community– Kyle’s high school, friends, and town– are rallying around him to help.
“I know it’s not going to be easy, but I have the whole community behind me.”
