The Oscar winner caught up with GQ this month and shared details about his life following the split, and he admitted that it’s been an uphill climb that takes consistent effort.

Kevin and Christine filed for divorce while he was filming his newest project, Horizon: An American Saga. The actor was also juggling the “immediate needs” of his children, Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 13, whom he shares with Christine.

“Those things are very important,” he told the publication. “I have to deal with them. And I have to deal with them on a daily basis, emotionally, historically almost.”

Kevin Costner Takes “Nobody Down” With Him

While the actual divorce was finalized in February 2023, it wasn’t settled until September, which meant Kevin Costner was fielding legal battles for months after the initial court decisions.

Nonetheless, the actor and director followed through with his responsibilities and obligations while seeing himself as Ahab from Moby Dick saying he “take[s] nobody down with me.”

“And what I’m going to do is — because we are now after the white whale, okay? So I can’t let go of this rope no matter how much my heart’s on the ground,” he continued. “No matter how broken I may be on a daily basis, I can’t let go of this rope because if I do, this thing called Horizon will stop.”

Kevin admitted that his movie was far less important than “other things” in his life. But he wasn’t willing to let the cast and crew down after he’d agreed to the multi-film saga, which he personally invested $38 million into. And overall, finishing the project was important to his career and personal well-being.

“I’m not going to lose myself. I’ve taken big bites out of life, life’s taken big ones out of me, right?” he noted. “I’m not going to lose myself because I’ve been bruised. I have been, but I’m not going to lose myself.”
