Brett James, best known for his Grammy-winning hits Jesus, Take The Wheel, Something in the Water, and Kenny Chesney’s When The Sun Goes Down, died suddenly on September 19. Brett, along with his wife, Melody Wilson, and her daughter, Meryl Maxwell Wilson, died in a small plane crash. The news devastated the country music industry. The loss devastated his dear friend, Kenny Chesney, who posted a long and loving tribute to the man he called his “Brother Of The Son.”

“I haven’t wanted to post cause I didn’t want to believe it. Brett and I shared a unique bond. A Brotherhood. A kinship. We wrote Reality and Out Last Night on the same afternoon sitting on my pool deck in the Virgin Islands two days after Christmas,” Kenny wrote. “We had a lot of authentic life fun writing songs together over the years and I’m sure going to miss it.”
Brett James Played A Key Part In Kenny Chesney’s Success
Kenny Chesney and Brett James collaborated for years to create music.
“Half the songs in my shows are songs he wrote or songs we wrote together. So it’s impossible for me to do shows moving forward and not think about him,” Kenny noted.
“I can’t believe I’m saying it but adios Brett James. Thank you for being a lifer, for being a shirtless, sunburned troubadour, for your friendship, your songs and all the laughs,” he added.
Kenny Chesney fans shared condolences following the loss of Brett James.
“Yep, been thinking about you and his whole community and family. This wonderful tribute and the others I’ve read make me want to be a better person. Thanks for that,” a fan wrote.
“When I heard the news I immediately thought of you and all the great songs that have come from the two of you. My heart breaks for you and his family. Prayers to all who knew him,” another person shared.
One fan let Kenny Chesney know Brett James will always be with him.
“His spirit will live on with the songs he wrote, keep singing his songs! Much love and prayers to you and his family,” they wrote.
