Jeff Baena’s death by suicide on January 3 shocked Hollywood. The 47-year-old director and screenwriter left behind Aubrey Plaza, who he began dating in 2010 and married in 2020. Aubrey and Jeff’s family released a statement on January 6 that read, “This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support/ Please respect our privacy during this time.” But it isn’t just Audrey who will miss Jeff Baena, many friends, like Jake Johnson, posted about their friends on social media. It’s never easy to say goodbye, particularly when the exit is sudden and unexpected, like Jeff’s. His family and friends continue to grapple with their loss.

Jake Johnson Posted A Short And Sweet Message To Jeff Baena
Jake shared a photo of Jeff and their friends playing poker on Instagram. He added a fitting caption dedicated to his friend. It reads, “I love you Jeff. Hate your last move. But still love you.”
Adam Pally, who Jeff directed in Life After Beth, Joshy, and The Little Hours. “He was a talented director with impeccable taste and vision, he was a connector of people, a fosterer of possibility, the guy who knows where the best restaurant was no matter where you were. An overly gracious host with an almost disturbing open door policy, a film encyclopedia, and most importantly to me a friend.”
Many others joined Jake Johnson and Adam Pally in paying tribute to Jeff Baena like Molly Shannon and film critic Courtney Howard who shared a clip to X of Aubrey on Ellen along wit the text, “Saddened to hear of filmmaker Jeff Baena’s passing. He’s gone far too soon. LIFE AFTER BETH and THE LITTLE HOURS are under-heralded comedy gems. He and wife/ frequent collaborator Aubrey Plaza were cute together, sharing an offbeat sense of humor & wit.”
