Adonis is a senior at Landstown High School in Virginia. He was born with no right leg, only one finger on his right hand, and a left leg that ends mid-thigh. Throughout his life, he’s made it his mission to prove that there’s nothing he can’t accomplish with his unique, but still very capable, body.

Adonis has found success in athletics on his school’s wrestling team. He qualified for the regional tournament as a freshman, but a series of events and the COVID-19 pandemic sidelined him sophomore and junior years. Going into competition in his senior year, Adonis was ready to show the world what he could do.

He had a stellar season, and at the state championships he won the Virginia High School League Class 6, 106-pound weight class!

The 17-year-old athlete says winning States was a goal he’d had for ages, and he was thrilled to finally see it come to fruition. He’s been wrestling since the second grade. He’s even an All-American athlete! Taking home the top prize in his age bracket was the culmination of a lifetime of hard work.

“I’ve been dreaming of this since I knew what it was, and to finally have it happen is just – I don’t know how to explain it,”he said. “Really if you work hard, you can do anything – even win a state championship without legs.â€

Adonis’s coach James Sanderlin has been one of his biggest cheerleaders this season – literally! Video of the teen’s winning match shows James pumping his fists and jumping up and down as Adonis pins his opponent to the mat. He’s clearly so proud of this student athlete’s incredible stamina and drive to succeed.

“He did all the work,” he said. “I just get to be a part of the journey. It’s an amazing feeling to watch him do it and have the support of the crowd. It was awesome. He’s a hard-working young man. I’m just speechless.”

Adonis hopes to keep wrestling in college next year. After that, who knows? The world is his oyster, and he has shown us all there is nothing he can’t do once he sets his mind to it.
