The movie Back to the Future played a universally significant role in the lives of millions of people growing up in the 1980s. We’re willing to bet that if you ask a random GenXer on the street, they can tell you what makes time travel possible, how Doc Brown came up with the Flux Capacitor, and exactly what you need to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of energy to send Marty McFly back to 1985. They will also tell you that the movie’s theme song is “The Power of Love,” performed by none other than Huey Lewis and the News. The song was a No. 1 hit for the band and one that we all still sing along to 40 years later. Sadly, Huey Lewis no longer has music in his life, and the reason will break your heart.

Huey Lewis Can No Longer Hear
He recently opened up about his hearing loss on the Inside of You podcast with Michael Rosenbaum about his Ménière’s disease. Huey Lewis explained that the condition changed his life immeasurably and took away something very important to him.
“At a certain point you gotta face the music. I can’t hear music,” Huey said. “Music is not part of my life anymore, which is a hard pill to swallow.”
He added that he sees other bands of his vintage playing and he’d love to be among his fans, too.
“I gotta say, God, I’d like to do that. So there are pangs,” Huey Lewis said. “And I can’t enjoy music. Like when I cook or have people over for dinner, I always used to play them music. And I have a great collection of old big band stuff and old New Orleans jazz, and I don’t play it at all anymore.”
But, Huey said not all is lost. He’s become quite a fisherman and loves to spend time on the water. He takes that as a huge blessing.
“Some people just have the ‘It’ factor. Huey is one of those people. What an uplifting and positive podcast/interview. I hope you can get Huey on again in the Future, Mike,” a fan cheered. “This was a great one!”
