Even if you’re not a Chicago Bull’s basketball fan, you may still be familiar with Horace Grant. His characteristic, thick goggles made him hard to forget.

The basketball player started his pro career in 1987. At the time, he didn’t need the corrective lenses on the court, but when doctors found that his eyesight was quickly declining in 1992, they prescribed him the goggles.

Fans began to worry about how the cumbersome eyewear would affect their star player’s on-court abilities.

They quickly realized, though, that the goggles didn’t hold him back in the least.

Horace wore the goggles for the majority of his basketball career – 12 of the 17 years he played. Though he was legally blind while he wore the goggles, Horace eventually got LASIK surgery, which corrected his eyesight.

But he continued to wear the glasses on the court.

The reason he kept the goggles as part of his game attire? This is what Horace said:

I kept wearing them without the prescription lenses because I had grandparents and parents come up to me and thank me for wearing them. Their kids and grandkids would get made fun of by wearing protective eyewear playing sports, so I kept wearing them to help make it cool to wear goggles for the kids.

Even after he could see perfectly, Horace donned the goggles in countless NBA Finals games and was even named an NBA All-Star in 1994. How great it is that a superstar like Horace did something so selfless in order to help kids he didn’t know who were getting bullied?
