Homeless Pet Parents Are Giving Their Animals Better Care Thanks To This Free Vet Clinic.

Sarah, a black lab, came to the free clinic with her owner.

We all want the best for our pets, but circumstances sometimes get in the way. It’s especially heartbreaking for dog and cat owners experiencing homelessness to know that they can’t always give their four-legged friends everything they need. Although it’s easy to criticize, some animal lovers are more interested in helping out. That’s why the American Veterinary Medical Association partnered with The Street Dog Coalition to host a free clinic during their Denver conference!

“I think there is a big judgment and stigma out there, about gosh you need to be able to afford everything or you shouldn’t have a pet, and I really struggle with that,” said Dr. Ashley Ackley, according to 9 News. “We’re all humans. We all love animals. Everybody here that brought their pets today, loves them.”

Dogs and cats attending the event received free check-ups and vaccinations, including heartworm, bordetella, parvovirus, and rabies. The Denver Post tells us that owners took home a variety of pet-care necessities, such as food, collapsible bowls, leashes, and hygiene kits. For pet parents without permanent housing, being able to get medical care and supplies for their furry friends meant the world.

“You don’t find a lot of places that are willing to help,” said Ulinda Carroll told 9 News. “They usually want a lot of money or they won’t help you.”

Ulinda brought her puppy, a black lab about 8 weeks old, to the free clinic to get an exam. While living in transitional housing, she and other pet owners had unfortunately lost their dogs to preventable illnesses due to lack of medical care.

“I literally just had a puppy die from parvo and our family can’t do another one,” she said.

Thanks to the AMVA clinic, Ulinda’s new dog, Sarah, is going to have a better shot at a happy, healthy future. Although the pooch may be young, she’s already formed a strong bond with her owner.

“I’ve been through so much abuse in my life,” said Ulinda. “She’s going to be my emotional support animal. So it’s super important because she’s like my other half.”
