Homeless Man Saves Family From House Fire After They Gave Him Place To Stay.

“I wouldn’t say I’m a hero,”he told KHOU. “I just thank God for helping us all. Not a hero.â€

That’s what Thomas Smith said when speaking about the horrific event that happened recently. The backstory is a bit more complicated than that.

After a long season of homelessness, Smith had just received a place to stay.  A friend of many years had just recently invited him to stay at her home – and the Houston native was overwhelmed by the generosity.  He finally had a place to lay his head comfortably.

But that would soon change as one night Thomas was awakened by a huge boom, though no one else in the house woke up. At first he thought a robbery was taking place, but soon the smell of smoke consumed the house. He quickly  realized what was happening – a huge fire was spreading.

Thomas immediately ran into his friend’s bedroom, where he found the 66-year-old woman trapped underneath debris which had fallen from the ceiling moments after the explosion that caused the fire.

“I jumped out the bed and ran to her room, and something was on top of her – sheet-rock and what not,”he said. “I told her, ‘Get up out the bed!’â€

Thomas quickly grabbed the woman and ran straight to the other bedroom where her two granddaughters – aged 8 and 10 years old – were sleeping.

“I got them out the house so fast,”he told KPRC2. “There was smoke!â€

Thomas is getting a lot of praise and attention for his heroic acts, but he truly is only concerned with his friend and her granddaughter’s safety and health.

Though he won’t admit it, he is indeed a hero.
