Hero Dad Put His Own Life on the Line to Stop School Shooter

Kaylub Giamanco

October 15, 2026, is a day residents of Bend, Oregon, will never forget. A 16-year-old opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School, killing three innocent children and a teacher. But before the gunman could do any more harm, 36-year-old father of two Kaylub Giamanco stopped him. Kaylub ate lunch at home and headed back to work when he heard gunshots at the school and saw the suspect enter the building, his brother Kyle Giamanco told NBC News. Kaylub, who has a concealed-carry permit, rushed into the building and stopped the deadly shooting.

“I believe God put the right man in the right spot at the right time. I don’t know anyone else who would have sprung into action like he did to save so many lives from a massacre,” Kaylub’s friend Dylan Costa told NBC News.

A GoFundMe Raised More Than $120,000 for Kaylub Giamanco

Kaylub Giamanco became a hero overnight, but his brother said he’s not ready to speak about the horrific tragedy. Amy Reynolds created a GoFundMe for Kaylub and his family.

“He acted out of love. Love for his daughters, love for the children inside that school and love for the community he has called home for most of his life,” she wrote. “Being brave does not mean being unaffected. Being a hero does not mean you don’t need help.

Kaylub, his wife Kelsey, and their two young daughters have an incredibly difficult road ahead of them. The emotional and psychological impact of this tragedy cannot be overstated, and they deserve the time, space, and resources to begin healing together.”

“Thank you for protecting and saving the kids and school staff! As a father and a husband of a teacher, this is my worst nightmare. We are all so proud of you and the courage you showed and had! A real Hero!” A donor wrote.

“You did what any father would do in this scenario! Angels are real and there are billions surrounding us every day. You were in the right place at the right time. You did what you had to do. Don’t be upset by your actions. God will not punish you. You saved lives of innocent young angels, and we love you for that,” another person added.

Together, the community has raised more than $120,000 for Kaylub thus far.
