Pregnancy loss is heartbreaking, even for mothers in the animal kingdom. Good friends Sanne and Iris live in the Netherlands with their seven horses and run a popular social media account called Equitality for their fellow equine fans.
Recently, one of their mares suffered a devastating pregnancy loss two months before she was due to deliver. The mare was left bereaved and depressed, so Sanne and Iris put some feelers out in their community to see if she could become a foster mother. As fate would have it, there was an immediate need for their mare’s nourishing milk and gentle parenting.
A local farm had lost a mare who was giving birth, and her orphaned foal was starting to show signs of weakness. They brought the foal to the mourning mare, and the two of them instantly hit it off! Within moments, the mama had accepted the baby as her own.
