Watching a loved one struggle with dementia can be incredibly difficult and isolating. That’s why Kiley Castañeda and her sisters have taken to social media to document their experience in taking care of their own mom. There are the more somber moments, of course, but there are still joyful ones, too. Take, for example, the moment this sweet grandma meets her grandson.

In the video, we can see that someone is helping Kiley’s mom walk into the hospital room. As soon as Grandma lays eyes on her grandson, her eyes light up.
Still, it’s clear that she’s a bit hesitant and maybe even unsure of what’s going on. She smiles on and off, though, especially as she gets closer to the newborn. Then, the moment that brings everyone to tears happens.
Grandma With Dementia Meets Her Grandson
In a new clip, Grandma is sitting down in a chair. Someone brings her grandson closer and, for a moment, she’s more present than ever. She even begins to cry what appears to be tears of joy. Folks have pointed out that she starts to repeat “my,” possible indicating that she’s trying to say something like “my grandson.”
“I could cry every time watching this video,” Kiley writes. “It’s hard to get her to completely understand what is going on but when she physically sees the baby it’s like a part of her is here and she understands. Kayden was born on October 19th, 2023 bringing a light into our family that we didn’t know we needed.”
