Golden Retrievers From All Over The World Gather In Scotland To Celebrate… Themselves!

Golden retrievers from all over the world come together in Scotland.

Can you imagine a world without golden retrievers? Neither could dog owners across the globe! That’s why hundreds of golden retrievers and their human families recently gathered at Guisachan House in the Scottish Highlands to celebrate the breed’s 155th anniversary. This now-crumbling mansion is the original birthplace of the friendly, fluffy dogs we all know and love!

According to Carol Henry, secretary of the Golden Retriever Club of Scotland, the event was more than just an excuse to party. It was also an opportunity to learn more about the breed. Activities included lectures, workshops, and a truly impressive procession that culminated in a sea of golden retrievers standing outside the ruins of Guisachan House. This gathering takes place every five years on landmark anniversaries. An evening of music marked the end of the day’s festivities, featuring a cover of “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).”

“We want to hold on to the confidence, the biddability, the companionship and loyalty – all the things the golden retriever was built on,” Carol told BBC News.

She added that Covid quarantines may have led to some lax breeding practices, which could affect future generations of golden retrievers.

Apparently, we have Sir Dudley Marjoribanks to thank for the popular dog breed. He bred a yellow wavy-coated retriever with a Tweed water spaniel, which no longer exists, to create the perfect hunting companion for the Scottish Highlands. The litter was born in 1868, and their names were reportedly Primrose, Cowslip, and Crocus. However, it wasn’t until 1913 that the The Kennel Club acknowledged the new breed.
