Director Steals The Show With Surprise Proposal During Emmy Acceptance Speech.

For a man who has spent his entire career working behind the scenes, director Glenn Weiss sure knows how to steal the show.

You may not recognize the name “Glenn Weiss,” but you’ve almost certainly watched one of his shows. Glenn has been the producer and director of countless live TV shows, from “American Gladiators” to the Academy Awards. In fact, at the 2018 Emmy Awards ceremony, Glenn was there to accept his 12th Emmy!

Yet it wasn’t his incredible career that turned his acceptance speech into a viral moment that everyone was talking about the next day… it was this:

That’s right! In the 70 years that the Emmy Awards have taken place, this is the first marriage proposal ever.

As Glenn accepted the award for Best Directing of a Variety Special for his work on the 2018 Academy Awards, he mentioned that his mother had passed away just two weeks before his big night. He then turned his attention to his long-term girlfriend, Jan Svendsen, who was watching him from her seat in the audience.

“Jan, you are the sunshine in my life,” he told her. “And mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.”

Jan immediately burst into happy tears, and as she made her way up to the stage the camera panned around at the excited crowd to capture some truly heartwarming reactions.

Up on stage, Glenn got down on one knee and presented Jan with his mother’s engagement ring. He managed to keep the mood light by making a side comment to his siblings at home, letting them know his father had given him mom’s ring and he “didn’t swipe it.”

“I want to put this ring that my mom wore on your finger in front of all these people and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above,” he said. “Will you marry me?”
