George Bush Michelle Obama

While it might seem that Michelle Obama and George W. Bush don’t have much in common, the pair actually have a very good relationship. On June 18, 2026, the former president attended the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, according to People. While chatting, George Bush Gave Michelle Obama a tin of Altoids mints. The inside joke came from the pair’s viral moment at Senator John McCain’s funeral in 2018. George told his daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, the story earlier this year, per People.

“I get a little antsy, as I’m sure you know, and I was sitting next to Michelle. That’s who I sit next to at funerals,” Bush, 79, told his daughter, Today show host Jenna Bush Hager, earlier this year. “And I was kind of teasing her and stuff, and I slipped her an Altoid. Not as a joke, but I thought she might want one.”

“And I got in the car afterwards, and you said, ‘You’re trending,’” he recalled to his daughter. “I didn’t know what trending meant,” the former President recalled.

When he and his wife, former First Lady Laura Bush, received an invitation to the grand opening, he knew just what to bring. George Bush told his daughter he ordered Michelle Obama a whole case of Altoids.

Following the day’s events, former President Barack Obama shared a message of gratitude with those who joined him and Michelle for their special day.

“To George and Laura, Bill and Hillary — we’re grateful for your friendship, counsel, and devotion to this country. And to Joe and Jill, thank you for being on this journey with us,” he wrote.
