There are so many unsung heroes that work tirelessly to keep communities operating, a lot of which suddenly came to light in the wake of coronavirus shutdowns. Miami resident, Jennifer Elegant has always appreciated her community’s trash collectors, but the day they were dubbed essential workers her appreciation grew even stronger and she decided to find a way to thank them for all they do.
Jennifer worked with neighbors in three neighborhoods to organize a celebration for the men, Saul Scruggs and Keon Richardson. Much to her pleasant surprise, a lot of neighbors were thrilled to join in. The best part? Saul and Keon had no idea the celebration was being planned.

Jennifer had worked with Saul and Keon’s boss, Rashad Williams to help execute the surprise. He said, “I told [Saul] that I needed him to meet me at a stop because a customer said that he missed her garbage. He’s already hyped up and mad thinking that he left the lady’s garbage, not knowing he has a big surprise coming.”
So, when the pair turned the corner and started driving down the street, they were shocked to find dozens of neighbors cheering for them and holding signs of love and appreciation. Even more, they couldn’t believe that news crews had shown up, too.

The town’s Mayor, Dan Gelber and Miami-Dade Commissioner, Eileen Higgins were among the attendees and personally thanked Saul and Keon for their work. They also presented them with certificates of appreciation from the county and a couple of gift bags, for good measure.

As if that wasn’t enough, Keon and Saul’s families were all in attendance, too. Saul’s wife, Geraldine, told her local news outlet that she was definitely “emotional” during the celebration and that “it’s exciting..to see that he does what needs to be done and everybody appreciates it.”
Jennifer appreciates Saul and Keon for more than just doing their jobs. On Facebook, she said, “Their positive energy and relentless acts of kindness inspire me, spread joy, and make the world a better place!”

To say that these men are essential to this neighborhood seems to be a huge understatement.
