Former Landlord Sends Man A $2,500 Check And Heartwarming Letter Of Thanks.

A letter from a landlord to their tenant.

An anonymous landlord is setting an excellent example for property owners everywhere with their letter to a former tenant. Chris Robarge shared via Facebook that he received an unexpected message from someone he used to rent from. In it, the homeowner explained that they’d been using the rent money to help pay off their mortgage. Now that they’d sold the house, the landlord enclosed a check for what they felt they owed the tenant. It amounted to $2,500!

“As a tenant of the property, some of the rent you paid each month contributed to paying off the principal of my mortgage,” the landlord wrote in their letter. “I firmly believe that the capitalist tradition of retaining that money after the sale of a property is exploitative and antithetical to a just society.”

The landlord went on to explain how they had calculated the amount in the renter’s check. Chris was absolutely floored by the homeowner’s actions. He went to Facebook (with the landlord’s permission) to share the contents of the thoughtful letter.

Chris could hardly believe it when he read the landlord’s letter and found the enclosed check.

“I have been sitting with this for more than a day and I am still completely beyond an actual way to describe what this act means to me,” Chris wrote in his post. “All that I can say is that there are people who talk about their values and there are people who actually live them, and the reason I wanted to share this is that I want to encourage us all to actually live our values.”

It must have taken a fair amount of effort for this property owner to calculate Chris’s share of the profits. Although the landlord wished to remain anonymous, their story serves as an inspiration to us all. Sometimes, it’s worth the extra legwork to do what you feel is right in your heart!
