Florida Man Records As Lightning Bolt Strikes Tree In Heart-Stopping Footage

Left image shows the bright flash as lightning strikes a tree. Right image shows the fading like from the lightning strike.

Welp, Florida Man is at it again. However, this isn’t the usual type of story you hear with that preface. This time we’re going to discuss an incredible weather phenomenon. Shoen Tripp draws comics and does character design, but last Friday, he was standing around recording a ferocious storm. He caught a once-in-a-lifetime clip just as a bolt of lightning strikes a tree. Like anyone who has an adventure like this, he did utter a couple of expletives on the video.

Friday evening, a lightning bolt struck a tree across the street. This was the closest bolt I ever captured #thunderstorm #weather #lightning #closeencounter #florida #fyp

Shoen was at his home, and the lightning strike hit a neighbor’s tree. He was close enough that the static electricity in the air probably gave him piloerection (relax, that’s the fancy, scientific word for goosebumps).

There are some questions in the comments about whether the lightning struck the tree or the house. The most likely scenario is that the lightning strike traveled through the tree and then the ground, causing the sparks at the front of the house. Lightning will most often seek the highest target. The ground can act as a conduit, allowing the generated electricity to travel as it disperses.

Shoen appears to be fascinated with recording storm footage. There are several videos and still images on his TikTok page that document the severity of Florida storms. In the next video, you can’t see a direct lightning strike, but it does illuminate the entire neighborhood’s trees.

The weather patterns in Florida are near-tropical. This means increased humidity levels and more frequent rainstorms compared to drier climates. Although it doesn’t rain constantly, it is not uncommon for short bursts of storms to roll through daily during some seasons.

If your joints become stiff and achy when it rains, consider Arizona for retirement.
