And fortunately for all of us romantics, there are plenty to go around! Anyone who’s spent time online has probably seen a tear-jerking video of a husband or wife surprising their spouse and kids after a tour of duty and there’s no denying – it’ll get you every time. The joy in these videos is palpable, even through a screen. But one military homecoming is gaining massive traction online for a slightly different take on the tradition!

It’s now Fleet Week, during which members of the Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard who have been overseas return to the States for some R&R. For many, this is also a time to reunite with friends and family.

San Diego-based Navy Officer Devon Turner got to make his way to New York City for Fleet Week, where he joined other service members for a morning at the Today Show Plaza.

Carson Daly hosted the event, which gave some service members who couldn’t reunite with their loved ones right away the chance to send their well-wishes to the people they care about on live TV.

Over the course of the event, Daly made his way to Officer Turner to interview him on camera about who he’s missed most while on duty. Of course, he immediately says he missed his wife, Stephanie, and two little ones. Then Daly asked him to read from the teleprompter to, in his words, “do the news.”

“Our top story this morning is Fleet Week,” Turner began. “As our ships sailed to New York, people from all over came to honor the military, including one family who traveled all the way from San Diego to surprise their husband and father, Devon Turner.”

As it turned out, the show and Officer Turner’s family concocted an elaborate surprise for their beloved husband and dad! He was visibly moved when he realized what was happening, and seconds later, his wife and babies rushed into his arms.
