To most people, Loretta Lynn was known as one of the biggest legends in country music history. But to Emmy Russell, she was simply grandma. For much of the 24-year-old’s life, she’s found herself trying to fill Lynn’s shoes. In the process, though, it seems that she struggled with her own identity. The pressure she felt, and put on herself, was far too much.

In her early 20s, Emmy traveled the world as a Christian missionary. Then, a few years ago, she found herself drawn back to the world of country music. In coming back to her roots, however, she’s taking a whole new approach — and it’s one she carries with her as an American Idol contestant.
“I use to run from my family heritage and wanna make my own path,” an Instagram post from Emmy reads. “I feel a deep conviction to thank, accept, and celebrate her [Lynn], cause she believed in me from the start before anyone did. Not ashamed anymore. She was never ashamed of me… I’m a granddaughter, and I’m Emmy… it’s all apart of me!”
To show off her beautiful vocals, Emmy sings an original song called Skinny, which is about having an eating disorder. Folks on social media were quick to share how moved they are by her lyrics and voice.

As you can imagine, the judges were surprised by Emmy’s connection to the music industry. Still, they gave her the space to be her own person, even encouraging the quiet singer to speak louder and with more confidence.
“Each one of us is trying to battle something we’re trying to overcome,” Lionel Richie shares with Emmy. “In your case, you have big shoes. Now, if I can just get you to put those shoes back in the closet — that’s not your size.”
It’s clear that talent runs in Emmy’s family, and we can’t wait to see what she does next — not as Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter, but as Emmy Russell!
